Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes. The best book I have ever read? Well, put it another way, I have never read another book quite like this one, which weaves together the lives of the artists, writers, etc., the people that have created the rich culture of Russia, with the dramatic events of the country's history. This creates a thrilling tapestry, full of incidents illustrating how Russia has evolved to be the troubled and enigmatic nation that it is still today. I wish there were such histories for other countries, including the UK, but I have never come across anything comparable to this one. Professor Figes has a fantastic ability to demonstrate the major themes of Russian history through its culture and the lives of its people. A must-read!
